The motor decides how a shading system feels in daily use. Four criteria that separate a good drive from a frustrating one.
Torque matched to the structure
A motor that is adequate in June can struggle in January, when cold stiffens seals and a wet blade carries extra weight. Ask for the rated torque against the actual dimensions of your roof, not a catalogue best case. An oversized drive costs little more and lasts years longer; an undersized one overheats, slows down and fails first.
Noise, measured not claimed
You will hear this motor every morning for the next decade. Sound levels differ meaningfully between drives of the same nominal class, and manufacturers measure under different conditions. Ask for the acoustic figure at one metre under load, and if the answer is a shrug, move on.
Sensors and open protocols
Wind and rain response should live in the system, not in your memory. Check that the drive accepts a dedicated anemometer and rain sensor, and that it speaks an open protocol so the pergola can join the same home automation controller as the lighting and heating. Proprietary islands work until you renovate.
Service life and replaceability
Even the best drive is a wearing part. The practical questions are how many cycles it is rated for, whether it can be exchanged without dismantling the roof structure, and what the warranty actually covers — the drive alone, or the labour as well. A motor designed for service keeps a ten-year-old pergola feeling new.
