An open-air classroom in the Aosta Valley

The project

A school in the Aosta Valley rebuilt its terrace around a simple idea: children learn better outdoors. Vertical zip awnings now shade the classroom windows and the play terrace, cutting summer heat inside the building and making the outside space usable for lessons from April to October.

Safe by construction

Zip-guided fabric runs in side channels with no gaps for small fingers, retracts fully into its own cassette, and stops at any height the teachers choose. No cords, no loose edges, no maintenance beyond a seasonal rinse.

Lessons outside

The measure of the project came on a June afternoon: twenty children drawing the mountains around them, in the shade, with the windows of their classroom glowing behind them. The awnings had simply made it possible.
