Dome awnings in a castle wine resort

The project

A wine resort inside a historic castle needed shade for its courtyard tastings without touching the facades. Dome awnings — rounded, fabric-covered frames that echo the shape of the old barrel vaults — gave each tasting table its own intimate ceiling.

An old shape, new materials

The silhouette is pure tradition; the engineering is anything but. Aluminum frames, solution-dyed fabrics and motorized extension let the staff open half the courtyard for a morning event and the whole of it for a wedding, in the time it takes to set the glasses.

Details of the courtyard

Deep blue fabric was chosen to match the estate's livery, with a woven valance that softens the line against the old stone. When the awnings retract at dusk, the courtyard returns to the castle — and the candles take over.
